Well hello there! We are BEYOND excited to go to WPPI this year. We’ve got a full schedule and we want to make sure to let you know where we’ll be and when we’ll be there.

Here's a post I published last year on attending the largest Wedding and Portrait Convention in the country. It's also the biggest party/tradeshow/learning experience and it can be a bit overwhelming. Hopefully some of you will find this helpful!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

1. Don’t try to do everything. You'll hear this a lot from many people who have been there, but seriously – DON'T try to see everything. You can't. It's too big, and you'll end up robbing yourself of the benefit of what you DO take in. Be picky about where you spend your time. You'll get the most benefit if you're intentional about hearing the topics that are most relevant to you – even if they're not being presented by the biggest rock-stars.

2. Walk the Trade Show floor twice. The first time, just walk through and soak it in. If it's your first time, there's no question – it will be overwhelming. I remember the first time I went, and literally stood in the middle of the trade show floor and teared up. Not because I was upset, but because for the first time – I was surrounded by people that "get me."

I was surrounded by all the tools and products I could use to grow my business, and it was awe-inspiring in many ways. So, I just walked around. I browsed through every aisle – just so I had an idea of what was there. I didn't stop to talk, and wasn't worried about finding anything. I just walked through the floor and took it all in. I recommend you do the same if it's your first time. There will be time later to stop and have conversations. There will be time to buy things for your business, or sign up for new services.

That's what the second walk is for. This is when you block off time, and go back to the vendors that you think can help your business.

3. Set up a WPPI only email address You'll thank me later. Every time your badge gets scanned for some kind of giveaway, or every form you fill out, you can guarantee will end up with some emails in your inbox. If you're like me, you're not really looking for more emails to manage, so I suggest creating a free gmail email account that you can use just for vendors at WPPI.

4. Sign up for Twitter. And download a an app so you can use it on your phone. Becker has a great video about using twitter at WPPI on www.thebschoolblog.com Twitter is how you find out about all the "extra" things happening at WPPI. All the meet-ups, get-togethers, lunches, dinners, parties, and the conversations that result, are AT LEAST AS valuable as the planned programming. There's really only one way of having a prayer at following what's happening, and that's Twitter.

5. Give yourself time to yourself. Even the most ravenous extroverts (like me), need some time to decompress. Even those of us who THRIVE on being around people, have to take a little time to process what's happening. If you're going to invest in your business by listening to speakers, engaging with your peers, and navigating the incredible maze of the trade show floor – commit to giving yourself some time to just filter everything that's happening.

So often people get charged up at WPPI. They learn, discover, engage, and walk away inspired to do more for their photography and their business. Then they get home, and very little – if anything – actually changes. So be proactive about allowing yourself to process the experience. Maybe you just take some time and eat breakfast by yourself one morning, or sit in your room and journal for a half hour. Just do something.

6. The good stuff isn’t on the program. There are incredible speakers at WPPI (I highly recommend my good friends Andrew and Jackie from Canfield Jenkins – especially if you shoot kids or seniors). There are super talented people sharing their wisdom, art, and talent with all of us. There are incredible opportunities to hear them speak – but in reality, that's such a small fraction of the REAL value of an event like this.

If you ask anyone who has been to WPPI in the past, they'll tell you the same thing – the REAL value is in the relationships. It's in the conversations. It's in the early morning coffees, or late evening drinks with your peers. It's in the new friends you make, and the old friends you reconnect with. This is where the real value comes from. So commit to stepping out of your comfort zone and engaging with the people around you. This is your industry – these are your peers – and there is so much we can teach each other.

7. What else would you add? Share it with us in the comments section below!

WPPI 2010 is behind us and we have all mostly recovered from our trip. I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone gained from their experiences there.
So, I would LOVE to hear from you and we can all share together.

~How many times have you attended WPPI?
~What were you looking MOST forward to?
~What was your favorite experience?
~Who was your favorite speaker ( master class, platform class or otherwise)
~What did you buy from the tradeshow?
~What do you think made the biggest impact?
~What will you do different next year?

I will start by sharing My blog post on it, which you can read here
But here is my cliff notes version
This was my 3rd time at WPPI
I was looking MOST forward to my master classes this year, as it was the first time I took them.
My favorite was actually organizing the photshoots that I put together and the Victor Sizemore shoot ( even though I froze)
Cliff Mautner was my favorite on flash. He is a Nikon shooter so it was easier to understand what he explained
I bought the Nikon 50 1.4 G
For me the biggest impact was just being a more confident person and being able to network with people. The PIF party and how wonderfully it all came together and honestly some things I learned about myself
Next year I will not plan SO much in such a short amount of time. I will try to get to more events and meet more people. I can tell you this much… next years shoot I put together is going to be BIGGER and BETTER!

~Emma

Share and Enjoy:

If you missed this event at WPPI, you missed one of the hottest programs…and the largest closing program in the history of WPPI. It was amazing to see all of these crazy talented people sharing treasures of information, inspiration, and plain ole’ belly laughs, in 5 minute presentations.

I’ll be teaching a small, hands-on class on our award-winning Lightroom workflow system this Sunday for PMA in Anaheim, CA. This is an unusual opportunity to actually learn Lightroom, and our system, in a small classroom setting. We normally only do this at our Digital Photography Bootcamp® in Oregon. Sign up ASAP as space is very limited! The PMA general event info is here. My class info is here. I hope to see you there!

This is the class description from PMA:

This session is an in-depth examination of setting up and implementing a professional imaging workflow with Adobe® Lightroom® to speed up image processing and management. The class will work with a variety of images (from import to output) that illustrate a wide variety of imaging challenges. The session will also address essential DAM (digital asset management) issues, including automating backup, managing redundancy, and intelligent expansion strategies. You may share access to an imaging workstation (up to two per workstation). Each class has 20 spots available for attendees who want to use their own laptop; choose the session number beginning with LAP. We’ll email you all the details ahead of time.

After you score a great deal for the hotel stay, your next greatest expense is going to probably be the flight to get to Vegas. Airfare can be al over the place and often it is hard to make sense of why some flights are certain rates. Here are some tips to get you to and from Las Vegas cheaply!

Things to Know

Each site and airline has their own way of presenting things and it’s good to know the game before getting really excited about a deal that really isn’t a deal. Each site has it’s own method of showing price, some show the full price after surcharges, taxes and fees and others do not and choose to tack them on at the end. Often the cost can change in upwards of $75. Also keep in mind that if you are checking any luggage, there is going to be a fee to check it both ways – often an additional $60 or so dollars per bag (unless you are using Southwest). Finally you want to find out if the airline charges for EVERYTHING on board or just food. The $5 waters add up when in air for 3+ hours.

Days Are Important

One thing that will change your prices dramatically is what days of the week you choose to fly in/out , how many days in advance you book your ticket and what days of the week you book on. If you are not set to a schedule, it is best to always choose the option to see days before and after you selected dates so that you can see the best prices. Typically Monday – Thursday are going to be your best rate days to fly in but each airline, location and sale will vary. Always remember that even if it’s a ‘steal’ to fly in 2 days before that’s an additional 2 days you will be paying for lodging and food. You also need to consider the days of the week you book for getting the best discount. Typically fares reduce about 45 days out, 30 days out, 14 days out and then sometimes 7 days out. It isn’t a hard rule but something to keep in mind when keeping an eye on fares. Finally, booking Tuesday – Thursday will provide you with the best prices typically.

Choosing Your Airport

While there is only one airport to fly into Las Vegas, there is usually a selection of locations you can choose to fly out of to get there. Often, different local airports can vary by a hundred dollars or more. When searching make sure to choose the option that allows the search of nearby airports as well as your preferred airport. You may be surprised.

WPPI Discounts

WPPI has negotiated discounts of 5-10% with certain airlines. Go here to find the discount code and book directly with the selected line for the best deals.

Surf the Web

The first site I always hit when booking airfare is Kayak. It does all of the searches for you and saves you a LOT of headaches. Just be prepared that there is going to be a lot of pages opening. It is however the quickest way to get an idea of what fares are and where to find them. Trip.com also offers a similar service in searching many sites at once.

Find a flight that suits your needs but want to get your best deal on it? Go to Yapta and sign up for their alerts so that you can find out when the fare drops. Yapta doesn’t allow you to purchase the flight through their site, but allows you to find the fares and purchase through the airline directly.

Orbitz also has a great deal by promising that if someone books your same flight for the same dates you get the difference back if the fare is cheaper.

Keep in mind that one of the cheaper airlines, Southwest, does not participate in any of the deal websites. Their fares are often very reasonable so make sure to hit up their site when surfing the web for the best deal. They also have an alert system that will tell you when a flight that you enter is on sale.

Finally if you are not picky about the times of day that you arrive and leave, always hit up Priceline and Hotwire and try to name your price. I always suggest finding what the lowest airfare is and then making educated guesses from there. Often $25 below is the sweet spot but sometimes it can go far below that.

Hopefully this helps you navigate the friendly skies a bit easier and the end result is a cheaper flight!
