I've been using Wunderkit for a few weeks now, and I think I'm in love. I know that's probably pretty strong language for a piece of software, but no kidding – it's changed the way I work. It's helped keep me more organized, made me more efficient, and made it simple to collaborate across multiple projects. Sure, it's still a beta, so there's a few things that I'd like to see better integrated – but I want to share with you my thoughts on using it in a photography business.

Before I get into a review of Wunderkit, let me give you a little background. First – Wunderkit is more than just a task manager, it's really a project management application. I've used a lot of different applications, trying to find something that offered flexibility, collaboration, and a robust task manager. I've used "Things," "BaseCamp," and even the task manager in iCal. As a tool for collaborative task management, Wunderkit is a powerful solution for individuals, or groups of any size.

Workspaces

Thought, certainly not unique to Wunderkit, I really like the way workspaces are organized. The idea is that you can create a workspace for every project, job, or area of your life. I spend my time leading and managing 4 completely different business areas, and Wunderkit makes it easy for me to manage them all. Each workspace contains all of the tasks, notes, and collaborators relevant to that project.

On the home screen (above), you see a sort of dashboard that features each of your workspaces on the left, a center section with all of the activity happening in your workspaces, and upcoming tasks. This high level overview makes it easy to quickly see what's happening, and what you need to do next.

COLLABORATION

Certainly BaseCamp is the gold standard of collaborative project management, but WunderKit has made it much easier for individuals and organizations that are looking for a slightly less prohibitive solution. I can share workspaces and delegate tasks to anyone I add in my network. I can have an entire team on a project, and they all have access to the tasks, notes and information they need. In addition, I'm able to see the activity of each individual as they add and complete tasks and notes.

For me, this is huge. I was a big fan of THINGS for a long time, but one of its biggest drawbacks was that it didn't allow delegation of tasks to other team members in any meaningful way. Now, I can keep track of what's happening with my teams, and keep our project coordinated across groups of 5-50. I simply invite team members to my workspace, and am able to keep track of everything we're doing.

Another unique feature is the ability to make a workspace public, so that people can follow you. Though this has less practical purpose, it's a fun way to let people see what you're doing.

SYNC

The other major drawback of THINGS was that there was no cloud sync. Wunderkit is available as a web application, and as a native app on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. I'm sure it will be available on other platforms as well, but for now I'm covered! It just doesn't make sense to have an app exist in multiple places without seamless sync, and WunderKit has it down.

The mobile, web, and desktop apps all have the same feel, and are super simple to use (though notifications don't seem to work on the iPhone quite yet). I love that I now have a project management tool that syncs across all of my devices. That was easily the biggest frustration with THINGS, and quite honestly, it was unacceptable in today's world of cloud technology.

USER INTERFACE/EXPERIENCE

The entire user interface is beautiful, and very Mac-like. Running the native app in fullscreen mode on OSX Lion is gorgeous. It has custom backgrounds, and I found that it works really well to set a different background for each workspace. This gives an instant visual cue as to what I'm looking at, and what I should be doing.

I love when a technology company has a passion for the user experience, and creates something both beautiful and functional. In fact, one of the things I've come to appreciate the most, is that the folks at 6Wunderkinder seem to really get it. They've shown this by the features they plan to implement in the future (like file sharing – which is a must have for a true project management tool), AND by the fact that they've made WunderKit completely FREE to use!

That's right, it's free. You can use it on your devices, your Mac, and the web for free. You can collaborate for free. You can create as many workspaces as you want for FREE. There is a PRO level that allows premium support, and additional access to some of the apps, but you can use all of the core functionality for free.

Ready to take advantage? Head over to www.wunderkit.com to download and sign up for FREE!

Have you used WunderKit? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

(I'm not affiliated in anyway with Wunderkit or 6Wunderkinder, and no one asked me to say anything nice or otherwise. I'm just sharing my opinion on a piece of software that has totally changed the level of productivity in my businesses and my life)

We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom (LR) tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip #5 :

You will see from this section that the previous ones come into play here, namely using the hand tool to move around an image while zoomed in. Here we are going to take an image and create bokeh (out of focus area) in a selected region of a photo where little or none exists. This can be done in Photoshop using the Gaussian blur but then you have to save the shot and reopen it in PS to finish the editing. Where can this technique be used? You can soften skin or retouch features/blemishes or isolate the area you want to be in clear focus. You can also lighten or darken the selected area to make the subject pop. Inversely, you could lighten the subject. We’re going to show some of this in a video below to demonstrate how it works.

Tip 5: To see what you are doing, you need to use the mask. It’s a small check box (in develop module) in the lower part of the LR screen. If at first the auto mask doesn’t seem to show anything, you can change the colour by holding down the shift key and pressing the letter “O” where it will alternate through a few colours. Of course it won’t show anything until you start using the adjustment brush which activates a layer in LR.

Here we’ll take a photo of yours truly and blur the background further than it already is. You could also use these techniques to completely black out or darken the background if that’s what you want the end result to be. Open the Adjustment brush tool drawer and reset the controls (see tip 2). We only want to use the Clarity slider in this adjustment (you can also use the Sharpening slider as well but it will have less effect). Move the slider to -100. Adjust the Flow to get the opacity you need to see the background and how much the effect adjusts the selected portion of the photo. For this example, I’m putting the flow at 75%. If it’s 100%, your going to have a difficult time erasing the sections you used the tool on the subject because you can’t see them.

First you want to mask the background from the sharper subject. Select the size you need the tool to be and reduce the feather enough that you can tightly use the tool around the edge of the subject. If you make a mistake and mask part of the subject, just later go back and use the erase tool to remove that part of the mask. If you really mess it up or are just learning to do this, you can erase the entire mask by simply selecting the Pin and hitting delete on the keyboard.

Once the entire region to be blurred is selected, then adjust the clarity to your liking. In the video clip below, I’ll adjust the exposure just to show you the effect a bit more dramatically.

We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip #3-4 :

Adjustment brush continued from Part 2

Tip 3: Ever zoom in on a particular section of a photo to make a fine adjustment and then need to make a similar adjustment to another part of the photo that is off screen while you are still zoomed in? If the Adjustment brush is open, it doesn’t seem possible and most people close the tool drawer, zoom in to the spot and use the hand tool to move to the new part of the image to be worked on. Here’s the easy way. The tool drawer is open, you are zoomed in, now hold down the space bar, click the Ctrl button and the hand tool will now be available to move around the image by simply holding down the left mouse button and dragging around the image in the preview window. Also, while the hand tool is active, a left mouse click will zoom in or out (alternatively) to the spot where the hand is. So if you are zoomed in to the upper left corner and the hand tool is active, then left click the image. It will now zoom out to see the full image. Move the hand tool to the new location you need to zoom in to and a single left click zooms you in to that new spot. This works in the Clone tool drawer as well and even more useful there.

Tip 4: Another way to zoom in. Just hit the letter “Z” and the image will zoom in to the ratio (example 1:1) you have selected in the upper left near the navigator window. You can change this ratio at any time even if the adjustment brush tool drawer is open. This method only zooms straight into the centre of the image. You will need to use the hand tool as described in Tip 3 to move to the spot you need to work on.

Cheers and good shooting

We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip 2-3:

The adjustment brush is a very powerful tool and this section will contain multiple tips because when I started to consider writing this tip, I realized that in some future articles, we’ll have to get in greater detail of some Lightroom sections like the Adjustment brush. To begin with we’ll explain or define some of the terms Adobe uses to describe parts of the software. One such item, Adobe calls the section where the adjustments or set of controls for a tool the ‘tool drawer’. Often you will find sliders used to adjust parts of the tool you are going to use or adjust things like a colour, sharpness and so on.

So here’s a few things about using the adjustment brush (or local adjustments).
Pin’s (Pins are the white dots on the image where you’ve made an adjustment) can show you which is ‘active’ or selected. If the pin is white, then the pin isn’t selected, if it has a black dot, then it is selected and you can make adjustments to it. This is very handy to be able to adjust various parts of the same image. You might have a dark region you need to brighten or often called dodging. A bright area might be burned to darken it and balance the scene.

Assuming you’ve already made some adjustment brush changes to the image, if you want to hide the pins or make them visible, just hit the “H” key. So if the pins are hidden and the adjustment brush tool drawer is open, then hit “H” and the pins will become visible. Click the pin you want to adjust.

The Adjustment Brush tool drawer allows you to specify options for two brushes, A and B and within each you can select New or Edit. Select a brush by clicking the letter, or switch between brushes by pressing the slash key (/). Then if you have made different adjustments with each ‘A’ and ‘B’ you can make further changes to each without affecting the other. Brush options “stick” regardless of the effect you choose to apply until you change them.

Tip 1: You can click on the pin and select it, then to make a small adjustment you can put the mouse over the Pin and hold down the left mouse button, Drag the mouse left or right and you will see whatever sliders you’ve earlier adjusted, move and adjust further. I find this just an ‘OK’ feature but it does work and might be easier if you find, fine adjustments to the slider(s) a bit tough.

Tip 2: To reset the slider or any of the controls in the Tool Drawer to their default positions, just double click on the word of that item. So lets say you have changed the brightness and want to reset to the middle, double click the word ‘brightness’. This applies to most of the controls.

Cheers and good shooting

We’ve decided to start a new series of editing tips here on EtL. Every once in awhile when the inspiration hits or we come across something new, we’ll put up a new tip on the site. We hope they help you speed up your workflow and make editing more fun, easier and creative.
Instead of huge tutorials, these will be simple little tips to make life with Lightroom 3 just a little bit simpler.

You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip 1:

Use the Ctrl button and your mouse to select the photos you want to Sync together.

So let’s say you have 100 photos loaded in Lightroom and they are taken in various lighting conditions. In this example, you’ve corrected a series of photos taken in artificial light and then the next shot was taken outside under very different light. The following photo is back indoors. You want to sync the previous photos with the last one. So you could export the middle shot and then delete it from the set, moving the last photo beside the previous one. Or you could do this simple shortcut.

Highlight the previous indoor photos that have been corrected the way you want them. Now move the mouse to the center of the thumbnail of the photo that needs to be sync’d with the previous set. Hold down the (sorry I use a PC) Ctrl button and left mouse click the thumbnail. Now the last photo(s) is added to the set to be sync’d. You can now select which photo is the one you want to Sync from. To do this, click on the center of that photo’s thumbnail. It will highlight a bit brighter and all photos will sync from what was done to that photo.

Note: If you click on the border of that thumbnail, you’ll lose the selection of the other photos. See the example photo above. The cool thing is you can continue to select random photos from the thumbnails, as many as you require. Just scroll through all the thumbnails and repeat the process using the Ctrl button.

A little bonus tip. Did you know that you can quickly select a set of photos using the shift key and a single click of the mouse? Again lets say you have 100 photos loaded. You may only want to edit a group of 10 similar shots or apply a preset to just those. You can click one to select it, next hold down the Shift key then hold down the left or right arrows to select those ten. Or a faster way is to select the first shot in the set with a click of the mouse, hold the shift key and then left click the last photo of the set. All the photos in sequence will be highlighted. You can do this for any number of shots and it might not save hours but it’s quicker and more accurate.

Combine the the 2 tips and you can select photos in any way you want.

Why you would want to know this is simple. Lets say you have 500 photos in LR. You want to make a global change to 300 of them or delete them (or any many other bulk tasks). Highlighting the first photo of those 300 and sitting there with one finger on the shift key while holding down the right or left arrow can take quite a while if there were 300 to select. Now this way, you highlight the first shot then use the scroll bar (very bottom of the screen) to move left or right to the last shot. Now hold down the shift key, click the left button on the center of the last image and voilà! The whole set is ready for that task.

Finally, combine both tips. See the second photo of Lightroom above. I highlighted 4 photos using our bonus tip. Then used the Ctrl key to add some random shots to that selected group.

Cheers and good shooting

A little breaking news on a great software deal. If you might have wanted to get Nik Silver Efex 2 Pro software, they have a 4 day Holiday weekend summer sale on right now and the price is $99. You save $100! It’s awesome Black and White software that works as a plugin for CS5 (older CS versions as well), Lightroom and Elements. Well worth it if you do much B&W conversion. No other preset or plugin for Lightroom or Adobe CS5 works quite like this with near infinite adjustments.

A little news for those of you who have dreamt of owning Abobe Photoshop CS5 but couldn’t afford the $699 price tag. How about less than half? Check out the Adobe store’s newly posted price of $299 (this is the Standard, not Extended edition), and if you want Lightroom 3, you can bundle both for under $400.

These are not the upgrade versions either, they are the full versions of the software. You don’t need to have a previous version of the software to qualify for the new price. I’m not sure if this is a short-term sale or a new permanent price, but it’s not showing up on Amazon or B&H, only at the Adobe store. It’s a bit of a shocking drop and I’ll bet they won’t hold this price too long, so you better be quick.

Helicon Focus is a photo stacking software program that can be used to get the most out of your macro shots but also your landscapes and probably a number of other applications that you can dream up.

The concept is simple, put your camera on a solid tripod. Then take multiple shots of the same subject and focus on various aspects of the subject or scene. Then stack the shots in the software to have all or most of the image in sharp focus. It will combine all the focused portions of the shot into one finished image.

John Costello has kindly provided us with a few examples of how he used the software to create a near and far sharp landscape image that far exceeds what could normally be done by just stopping down the lens. The shots were all taken with a Nikon D300 at f/2.8 using 80-200mm, ISO 200 1/1000. So wide open, the lens is going to have extremely shallow depth in each shot. 13 frames were taken and stacked in Helicon Focus.

Focus on close up subject

Stacked from 13 frames, final version

From the software website:

Why Helicon Focus?

Quality: advanced interpolation techniques, 16 bit workflow, direct RAW input

Scope: unlimited number of images, resolution over 100 Mpixels, 64 bit support, Windows/Mac versions

Performance: very fast, multi-threaded, i7 compatible, batch and command line modes available

Tools: clone from source brush to repaint possible artifacts, 3D model , dust map, 2D panorama, Helicon Remote for automated focus bracketing

Visit them for a 30 day trial version at Helicon Focus Downloads or visit their home page, Helicon Focus, where you will find further explanations and a few sample how-to videos showing the software in action. This might not be for everyone, given prices ranging from $30 for the basic to $250 for the 64 bit Pro version, but if you are serious about macro and/or landscape shooting, then it just might be the thing you need to take your photography to the next level.

Also if you are looking for free photo software, you should visit our page of free software for plenty of alternative choices.

Thanks to John Costello for providing the photo samples above and telling me about the software. You can see John’s photography at Silver Fox Photography.
