Adobe released the beta version of Lightroom 4. Here are just some of the killer new features:

1. MUCH better video integration
2. Soft proofing
3. Better geotagging
4. New shadow/highlight controls
5. Photo books via Blurb – (Will this be the end of Aperture for Scott Kelby who primarily liked Aperture’s photo books feature:))
6. Improvements to the clarity tool
7. Improved DNG format
8. Burn to disk archiving
9. New toolbars in all menus
10. Better search filters
11. Better white balance tool

There are a few things you should know. This is a real Beta. It’s pretty solid but there are still issues and I don’t recommend using this version for any professional or serious work just yet. You also can’t import LR3 catalogs into LR4 as a precautionary measure. You will need to convert your LR3 catalogs at some point if you want to use the retail version of LR4 when it ships. This is similar to the change Aperture went through not too long ago. People who upgraded to the latest version had to upgrade their libraries as well. It’s not a big deal but you need to know about it.

I am and probably will be, an Aperture man until I die. But I recognize the community seems to prefer LR so I try to stay current on it. I am far from an expert, when it comes to Lightroom, but my pals at Kelby Media Group ARE experts and I suggest you visit their new dedicated LR4 website if you are interested in this latest version of Lightroom.

Oh and P.S. – Welcome Lightroom – at roughly three times the money you’ve now got features Aperture has had for five years (Sorry I couldn’t help myself – really – I’m getting counseling )

NOTE: Guest Post by Laura Shoe — Follow Laura on Facebook

Keywords let you assign terms that you can use to recall them later via search in Lightroom. For an ocean photo of mine, examples might be Oregon, Seaside, coast, seascape, sunset. Keywording your photos will make finding them so much easier and faster, so don’t skip it!

Lightroom has at least five different ways to keyword. I’ll discuss the most commonly used three. Experiment with these to find the way or ways that work best for you.

* Type Keywords in the Keywording Panel

The Keywording panel is on the right in the Library module. Select one or more photos in the grid, then type in the large or small box, separating keywords with commas. Hit Enter/Return to finish. (Note, you must be in Grid view to apply keywords to a group of photos!)

* Use the Painter Tool to Spray on Keywords

Click on the spray can in the toolbar at the bottom of the grid. If you don’t see your toolbar (shown below), type T to reveal it. If you see your toolbar but not the spray can, click on the downward pointing triangle at the right edge of the toolbar and choose Painter.

Next to where you clicked on the spray can, choose Paint: Keywords, and in the box to the right of this, type in the keyword or keywords you want to apply. Hit Enter/Return.

Finally, click on each photo thumbnail you want to apply the keyword(s) to. To remove the keyword(s) you applied, hold down the Alt/Option key as you click again to erase.

Why the paint can symbol? It’s a fun reference to graffiti tagging!

* Use the Keyword List Panel

This panel is below the Keywording panel. It shows you all keywords you have ever applied to any photo in your catalog. To apply a keyword already in the list to one or more selected photos, click on the little box to the left of the keyword to put a checkmark in the box. To remove a keyword from selected photos, click on the checkmark to remove it.

To add a new keyword, click on the plus to the left of the Keyword List panel name, and enter it as the Keyword Tag. Generally you can keep the options set to the defaults. If you don’t have a photo in the grid selected, the keyword will just show up in your list for future use. If you do have a photo selected, the dialog will have a checkbox to add the keyword to the selected photos.

Of course the next step is learning how to search for your photos based on keywords. I will discuss this in my next post.

The other two ways to keyword are to use the Keyword Sets and Keyword Suggestions portions of the Keywording panel — these will be covered in a future post as well.

This Lightroom Podcast is in answer to the questions: How do I make duplicate images in Lightroom and name them with unique names so I can show them to a client and be able to keep them separated?

This is basically a question of when you should use a virtual copy vs a DNG copy. So here is the answer.

Many people only think about the Lens Correction Panel in Lightroom 3 when they are trying to correct either a vignette or warping from an extremely wide angle lens. But most lenses (especially zoom lenses) warp the image to some degree. Using the Lens Corrections is not just for wide angle lenses. This tool helps images from every lens with very little user intervention. Try it out. I think you will love it.

So many questions can be answered by simply right clicking in Lightroom. If you want to do something to anything in Lightroom, try right clicking it and see what you get. This is just a short list of things that the right click can do and by no means exhaustive. Just right click everything in Lightroom, even the little triangles at the edge of the screen, or the individual section headings on the left and right panels. Spend 20 minutes just right clicking. It will answer so many questions that you will no longer have to ask me about. As much as I like being needed… I’d rather have you exploring and discovering things for yourself.

And if you are on a mac, you do have a right click, you just need a mouse with a right click button. Or hold down the control key and click. (This is the point at which all PC users may laugh at the mac users. Your one chance!)

**UPDATE – THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED – THANKS TO ALL THAT ENTERED**

During the week we got the following press release from the makers Photosmith – a cool App for iPads. We also got permission to give a couple of copies of it away so once you see if it’s for you – check out how you can enter to get one below.

Press Release – Tuesday 26 April, 2011

Photosmith brings Lightroom synchronization to the iPad
Photosmith introduces sorting and tagging to photographers on the go.

Atlanta, GA. April 26, 2011 – C Squared Enterprises, Inc has released Photosmith for the iPad. Photosmith brings the ability to manage photos using collections, keywords, tagging, ratings, EXIF, and IPTC metadata. Photographers no longer need to wait until they get back to their main computer or drag a laptop to sort through photos or show clients their latest results. With Photosmith, photographers can load their photos directly on the iPad, filter, sort, rate, and keyword while in the field/studio. When they get back to Adobe Lightroom on their Mac or PC they can sync all photos from the iPad to Lightroom and all of their tagging and rating will also transfer with no need to duplicate effort.

Photosmith improves the photographer’s digital workflow, especially flows with RAW images. Photosmith offers viewing of full RAW image data from the latest dSLR cameras in full fidelity and up to 100% zoom; even on 25+ megapixel images. Photosmith offers a grid view for quickly sorting through thumbnails and collections, a loupe view for viewing individual images and tagging, and a full screen view to maximize use of the screen. Users can assign a rating, choose a color label, view the basic EXIF data (shutter speed, ISO, f/stop, and more), or edit the title, caption, or a number of other IPTC fields. All these settings are synchronized with Lightroom using the free Photosmith plugin. Future changes made in Lightroom are saved back to the iPad during a sync as well. See more at: http://bit.ly/PhotosmithTour

Photosmith assists photographers on the go with sharing their photos too. Photos can be sent to Flickr, Facebook, Dropbox, or email. Those sent to Flickr and Facebook maintain their titles and keywords, allowing pros to quickly share and get feedback from their clients, or allows the causal photographer to share photos while on vacation.

Photosmith is the culmination of 24 months of effort and development continues to add new features over time. Users are encouraged to submit feedback and suggestions to help drive the future of the app.
The app is available worldwide for US$17.99 (or the approximate equivalent).

For more information please visit http://www.photosmithapp.com

What is Photosmith?

The best time to organize your photos is when you take them. Photosmith fills the gap in the photographer’s workflow by letting you organize, rate, tag and label your photos while on the road with your iPad. When you get back you can easily sync with Adobe Lightroom® on your PC or Mac.

The iPad a great device with a beautiful screen, but there’s only a limited number of apps that really fit within thedigital photographer’s workflow. If you take your pictures while on vacation, on a photo shoot, or anywhere away from your computer, you may end up with hundreds or thousands of pictures that need to be organized, tagged, and categorized, and no easy way to do so. Worse yet, even if there was a way, you’d have to duplicate the process when you get back home or to the office. For photographers who use Adobe Lightroom, this was especially true.

Two seasoned programmers (and avid photographers), Chris Horne and Chris Morse, decided to change all this. They created Photosmith, an app for the iPad that completes the critical part of the workflow between taking the pictures and organizing them back at the desktop computer. While a notebook computer in the field works, it’s bulky and overkill many times for the quick photo organization needed. Photosmith reduces the problem down to a touch interface, powerful enough to be the only computer a photographer needs while traveling.

Photosmith offers photographers on-the-go tools that haven’t been seen in apps before. Full RAW viewing capability, including 100% zoom on 20+ megapixels cameras. Uploading images and tagging to Flickr, Facebook, and Dropbox. IPTC tagging, rating, keywording, all with full sync from the iPad to Lightroom, using the free plugin for Lightroom.
