We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom (LR) tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip #5 :

You will see from this section that the previous ones come into play here, namely using the hand tool to move around an image while zoomed in. Here we are going to take an image and create bokeh (out of focus area) in a selected region of a photo where little or none exists. This can be done in Photoshop using the Gaussian blur but then you have to save the shot and reopen it in PS to finish the editing. Where can this technique be used? You can soften skin or retouch features/blemishes or isolate the area you want to be in clear focus. You can also lighten or darken the selected area to make the subject pop. Inversely, you could lighten the subject. We’re going to show some of this in a video below to demonstrate how it works.

Tip 5: To see what you are doing, you need to use the mask. It’s a small check box (in develop module) in the lower part of the LR screen. If at first the auto mask doesn’t seem to show anything, you can change the colour by holding down the shift key and pressing the letter “O” where it will alternate through a few colours. Of course it won’t show anything until you start using the adjustment brush which activates a layer in LR.

Here we’ll take a photo of yours truly and blur the background further than it already is. You could also use these techniques to completely black out or darken the background if that’s what you want the end result to be. Open the Adjustment brush tool drawer and reset the controls (see tip 2). We only want to use the Clarity slider in this adjustment (you can also use the Sharpening slider as well but it will have less effect). Move the slider to -100. Adjust the Flow to get the opacity you need to see the background and how much the effect adjusts the selected portion of the photo. For this example, I’m putting the flow at 75%. If it’s 100%, your going to have a difficult time erasing the sections you used the tool on the subject because you can’t see them.

First you want to mask the background from the sharper subject. Select the size you need the tool to be and reduce the feather enough that you can tightly use the tool around the edge of the subject. If you make a mistake and mask part of the subject, just later go back and use the erase tool to remove that part of the mask. If you really mess it up or are just learning to do this, you can erase the entire mask by simply selecting the Pin and hitting delete on the keyboard.

Once the entire region to be blurred is selected, then adjust the clarity to your liking. In the video clip below, I’ll adjust the exposure just to show you the effect a bit more dramatically.

Etl LR Video. LR tip Part 4

We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip #3-4 :

Adjustment brush continued from Part 2

Tip 3: Ever zoom in on a particular section of a photo to make a fine adjustment and then need to make a similar adjustment to another part of the photo that is off screen while you are still zoomed in? If the Adjustment brush is open, it doesn’t seem possible and most people close the tool drawer, zoom in to the spot and use the hand tool to move to the new part of the image to be worked on. Here’s the easy way. The tool drawer is open, you are zoomed in, now hold down the space bar, click the Ctrl button and the hand tool will now be available to move around the image by simply holding down the left mouse button and dragging around the image in the preview window. Also, while the hand tool is active, a left mouse click will zoom in or out (alternatively) to the spot where the hand is. So if you are zoomed in to the upper left corner and the hand tool is active, then left click the image. It will now zoom out to see the full image. Move the hand tool to the new location you need to zoom in to and a single left click zooms you in to that new spot. This works in the Clone tool drawer as well and even more useful there.

Tip 4: Another way to zoom in. Just hit the letter “Z” and the image will zoom in to the ratio (example 1:1) you have selected in the upper left near the navigator window. You can change this ratio at any time even if the adjustment brush tool drawer is open. This method only zooms straight into the centre of the image. You will need to use the hand tool as described in Tip 3 to move to the spot you need to work on.

Cheers and good shooting

We’ve decided to start a new series of Lightroom tips here on EtL. You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip 2-3:

The adjustment brush is a very powerful tool and this section will contain multiple tips because when I started to consider writing this tip, I realized that in some future articles, we’ll have to get in greater detail of some Lightroom sections like the Adjustment brush. To begin with we’ll explain or define some of the terms Adobe uses to describe parts of the software. One such item, Adobe calls the section where the adjustments or set of controls for a tool the ‘tool drawer’. Often you will find sliders used to adjust parts of the tool you are going to use or adjust things like a colour, sharpness and so on.

So here’s a few things about using the adjustment brush (or local adjustments).
Pin’s (Pins are the white dots on the image where you’ve made an adjustment) can show you which is ‘active’ or selected. If the pin is white, then the pin isn’t selected, if it has a black dot, then it is selected and you can make adjustments to it. This is very handy to be able to adjust various parts of the same image. You might have a dark region you need to brighten or often called dodging. A bright area might be burned to darken it and balance the scene.

Assuming you’ve already made some adjustment brush changes to the image, if you want to hide the pins or make them visible, just hit the “H” key. So if the pins are hidden and the adjustment brush tool drawer is open, then hit “H” and the pins will become visible. Click the pin you want to adjust.

The Adjustment Brush tool drawer allows you to specify options for two brushes, A and B and within each you can select New or Edit. Select a brush by clicking the letter, or switch between brushes by pressing the slash key (/). Then if you have made different adjustments with each ‘A’ and ‘B’ you can make further changes to each without affecting the other. Brush options “stick” regardless of the effect you choose to apply until you change them.

Tip 1: You can click on the pin and select it, then to make a small adjustment you can put the mouse over the Pin and hold down the left mouse button, Drag the mouse left or right and you will see whatever sliders you’ve earlier adjusted, move and adjust further. I find this just an ‘OK’ feature but it does work and might be easier if you find, fine adjustments to the slider(s) a bit tough.

Tip 2: To reset the slider or any of the controls in the Tool Drawer to their default positions, just double click on the word of that item. So lets say you have changed the brightness and want to reset to the middle, double click the word ‘brightness’. This applies to most of the controls.

”…the thing where you… oh, oh shutter speed!!”

The curious thing about the video is how many dislikes there were vs ‘Likes’ Maybe all those “real” MWAC’s got the joke and were offended.

There are several videos in the set. I wonder how long she’ll keep this going.

We’ve decided to start a new series of editing tips here on EtL. Every once in awhile when the inspiration hits or we come across something new, we’ll put up a new tip on the site. We hope they help you speed up your workflow and make editing more fun, easier and creative.
Instead of huge tutorials, these will be simple little tips to make life with Lightroom 3 just a little bit simpler.

You will find all of these in our menu above. Look for “lessons” and find ‘Lightroom tip of the day’ in the scroll down menu.

So here’s tip 1:

Use the Ctrl button and your mouse to select the photos you want to Sync together.

So let’s say you have 100 photos loaded in Lightroom and they are taken in various lighting conditions. In this example, you’ve corrected a series of photos taken in artificial light and then the next shot was taken outside under very different light. The following photo is back indoors. You want to sync the previous photos with the last one. So you could export the middle shot and then delete it from the set, moving the last photo beside the previous one. Or you could do this simple shortcut.

Highlight the previous indoor photos that have been corrected the way you want them. Now move the mouse to the center of the thumbnail of the photo that needs to be sync’d with the previous set. Hold down the (sorry I use a PC) Ctrl button and left mouse click the thumbnail. Now the last photo(s) is added to the set to be sync’d. You can now select which photo is the one you want to Sync from. To do this, click on the center of that photo’s thumbnail. It will highlight a bit brighter and all photos will sync from what was done to that photo.

Note: If you click on the border of that thumbnail, you’ll lose the selection of the other photos. See the example photo above. The cool thing is you can continue to select random photos from the thumbnails, as many as you require. Just scroll through all the thumbnails and repeat the process using the Ctrl button.

A little bonus tip. Did you know that you can quickly select a set of photos using the shift key and a single click of the mouse? Again lets say you have 100 photos loaded. You may only want to edit a group of 10 similar shots or apply a preset to just those. You can click one to select it, next hold down the Shift key then hold down the left or right arrows to select those ten. Or a faster way is to select the first shot in the set with a click of the mouse, hold the shift key and then left click the last photo of the set. All the photos in sequence will be highlighted. You can do this for any number of shots and it might not save hours but it’s quicker and more accurate.

Combine the the 2 tips and you can select photos in any way you want.

Why you would want to know this is simple. Lets say you have 500 photos in LR. You want to make a global change to 300 of them or delete them (or any many other bulk tasks). Highlighting the first photo of those 300 and sitting there with one finger on the shift key while holding down the right or left arrow can take quite a while if there were 300 to select. Now this way, you highlight the first shot then use the scroll bar (very bottom of the screen) to move left or right to the last shot. Now hold down the shift key, click the left button on the center of the last image and voilà! The whole set is ready for that task.

Finally, combine both tips. See the second photo of Lightroom above. I highlighted 4 photos using our bonus tip. Then used the Ctrl key to add some random shots to that selected group.

Cheers and good shooting
Power Tools are small bits of software that can be Photoshop-compatible plug-ins, Photoshop Actions, or selected graphics utilities that make a digital photographer’s life a little easier for creating practical or special effects. Much like an electric screwdriver makes household projects faster than using old-fashioned hand tool, software Power Tools let you produce imaging projects quicker and with less fuss, than doing it “the hard way.”

One of the inescapable rules of digital imaging is that if you have to go through a set of enhancement or correction steps once, you’ll probably have to do it again sometime in the future. Instead of having to keep track of what you are doing by making notes with a pen and paper, Photoshop’s Actions palette lets you record a sequence of editing steps as an “action” that can then be applied to a selection in the same image, another image file, or in a batch-type operation to hundreds of different files.

The order in which tasks are executed can be edited by dragging-and-dropping. You can playback an Action with steps disabled or display selected dialog boxes during playback to interactively adjust settings. Multiple actions are displayed in the Actions palette and sets of actions can be saved and loaded separately. Actions can also be used to batch acquire of images from a digital camera, allowing an entire set of images to be automatically acquired, retouched, and saved. Action sequences can even be saved and shared with others and since these .ATN files are usually small, download is instantaneous.

Actions are stored in the Photoshop Preset folder and all versions of Adobe Photoshop bundle some prerecorded actions but you may have to install them before you can see all of the possibilities that are available. If you want to be able to save and load them, click on the arrow in the Actions palette and use the “Save Actions” and “Load Actions” command, which will allow you to store your current set of actions in an external file.

Free actions are available all over the Web, and commercial actions are produced by talented photographers and designers such as Panos Efstathiadis, Kevin Kubota, Craig Minielly, Gavin Philips, and others. Let Google be your guide and have fun with Photoshop Actions.

Joe Farace is the author of “Studio Lighting Anywhere” the second book in a trilogy or glamour and portrait photography from Amherst Media. It’s available on Amazon.com.

Guest post & images by Kevin Kubota – Follow Kevin on Twitter

We’ve all seen a photograph with a unique, dramatic essence that urges us to stare just a little longer in awe, even when we don’t have the time to do it. We may not even know, at first or second glance, what exactly it is about the image that makes it so captivating, but it’s rich with mood and cinematic prowess. Photographers may respond with genuine admiration (or even envy) while viewers are wildly impressed.

Chances are, the high-impact photographic artistry may have been achieved with assistance from a digital texture. In case you’re unfamiliar, a texture used in digital photography often begins as a digital photo itself that gets imposed over another primary digital photo, typically accomplished through Adobe Photoshop. This takes a photo to the next expressive level and helps elevate the feeling that you evoke within a viewer. Textures can impart a colorizing effect, an almost tangible character, or both, to your image. For example, as you’ll see in the following tutorial, while I’ll be providing a mystical warming feel to an image with a basic texture overlay, the effect could also be reversed entirely using a cold blue icy texture to impart a totally different effect on the viewer.

Some of the factors that I consider when choosing a texture to overlay with an image include the texture’s color(s), its brightness, and its level of detail or busyness.

Photoshop is a powerful tool for photographers and image editors, and is the go-to option for creative use of textures. That said, the program comes with a fairly heavy learning curve. This tutorial will walk you through how to manually apply a texture to a photograph (I’ll be demonstrating with Photoshop CS5), and for those Photoshop owners who are still learning the ropes and simply want to cut to the creative chase, I will then show you how textures are easily and quickly applied using my Texture Tools from the Kubota Bor-Tex DASHBOARD.

1) Open your primary photo in Photoshop. You will also need to have in view your Layers Palette [Window > Layers].

2) Assuming your primary photo has already been edited as desired, pre-texture, browse to place your desired texture onto the primary photo [File > Place]. To ensure the best quality, select a texture file that is at least, or is close to, the same size and resolution as your primary photo.

3) As seen below, the texture arrives as a Smart Object which will allow you to resize, stretch, and rotate the texture to exactly how you want it to appear over your primary photo. You’ll also see that the texture is initially attempting to fit only to the width of my primary photo. Adjust the placement of your texture. Working in Full Screen Mode will be helpful in allowing you to transform the texture exactly to your liking.

Once you’ve decided on the texture’s placement, simply hit your Return Key (the criss-cross lines will go away). Looks great, doesn’t it? Very dramatic! (I’m kidding. There’s more.) You will next make a couple of adjustments from within your Layers Palette.

4) With your texture layer still selected, slide your Opacity Adjuster down to your desired level. I have chosen 60%.

5) You’ll see there is a drop-down menu immediately to the left of the Opacity indicator. This is for selecting a Blend Mode, which will determine how the texture merges with the primary photo. Try out several of the options until you find the one you like the most. Below, I chose the Hard Light blend mode, which intensifies both the shadows and highlights of the texture layer.

Should you desire to remove any of the texture from a portion of your primary photo (typically from something like skin), there are a couple of advanced techniques to do this. Step 6a will guide you through removing the texture and its color simultaneously. If you would prefer to remove only the texture but maintain its color, which usually results in a cleaner blend between the textured and non-textured parts of the image, skip to step 6b.

6a) With the texture layer still selected, click on the “Add layer mask” icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette. This will add a Layer mask thumbnail to your texture layer.

Next, click on the Brush Tool from your side Tool bar, set your Brush Opacity to 100%, and then be sure you have selected Black as your foreground color.

Begin painting away the texture as you see fit. Above, I painted away the texture AND its color completely from the bride and groom which returned them to their original appearance. This might work with some images, but often the result is a subject that now appears awkwardly separate from its newly transformed environment. I prefer a more even blend between the texture and my primary photo, which brings us to the alternate approach below.

To maintain the color and only paint away the texture, follow step 6b instead.

6b) With the texture layer still selected and without adding a Layer Mask, create a Gaussian Blur [Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…]. When the options window pops up, select a Radius of all 250 pixels, and click OK.

This will create a Smart Filter right under your texture layer. Click to select the white Filter effects mask thumbnail and invert the Smart Filter [Image Adjustments > Invert or command+I (Mac), control+I (PC)], which will turn the Filter effects mask thumbnail from white to black.

Next, click on the Brush Tool from your side Tool bar, set your Brush Opacity to 100%, and then be sure you have selected White as your foreground color.

Begin painting away the texture as you see fit. I’ve painted texture away from the skin on both the bride and groom, leaving some texture on their clothing, while maintaining the texture’s color throughout.

BEFORE AFTER

Now you know how to apply and manipulate a texture with a photograph. Another method for applying textures is illustrated below in the way of the using Texture Tools from the Kubota Bor-Tex DASHBOARD. This method will especially accelerate your photo editing competence if you’re just getting started in Photoshop or will ease your workflow if you’re a Photoshop pro.

1) Make eye contact with your mouse and, in a low voice, say the words: “BOR-TEX. DO IT.”

Your image will open in Photoshop, a texture will be applied and removed from all skin, it will be saved and a free 16×20 canvas wrap will be delivered to your default shipping address within one hour.

What, you didn’t know that’s what Bor-Tex can do? Okay, maybe not ALL of that, but if I got you to utter those words to your mouse, that rocks.

1) Open your primary photo in Photoshop and open your floating palette plug-in, the Kubota Bor-Tex DASHBOARD [File > Automate > Kubota Bor-Tex Dashboard Palette…].

2) Assuming your primary photo has already been edited as desired, pre-texture, browse through the texture options from within the Bor-Tex DASHBOARD, previewing the texture in the window pane above the texture list. Select the texture you want by double-clicking on the texture name or selecting Apply in the bottom-right corner. (I’ve selected Calm from the Earth Texture Tools collection).

3) As seen below, the texture arrives in Free Transform Mode which will allow you to resize, stretch, and rotate the texture to exactly how you want it to appear over your primary photo. Right-clicking on the texture will provide a menu of other options such as flipping and rotating in a variety of ways. You’ll also see that Bor-Tex has initially placed the texture to fit perfectly over your primary photo. (I’ve minimized the Bor-Tex DASHBOARD by clicking on the blue area at the top.)

Adjust the placement of your texture, if necessary. I’ve rotated my texture 180º. Once you’ve decided on the texture’s placement, simply hit your Return Key (using Bor-Tex, a small window pops up walking you through these steps, by the way).

This is where Bor-Tex really goes to work. Here’s a rundown on what Bor-Tex has just automatically accomplished for me, in a matter of seconds:

✓ the Opacity of the texture has been set to 80%,
✓ the Blend mode has been set to Overlay (by default)
✓ the Gaussian Blur has been created
✓ the Smart Filter has been created and inverted
✓ the Paint Brush has been selected
✓ the Brush Opacity has been set to 100%
✓ the color White has been selected

4) As suggested by the Bor-Tex pop-up window, feel free to paint any texture away from a portion of your primary photo (typically from something like skin) using the brush that has already been selected for you (you will be removing only the texture while maintaining its color). I’ll paint the texture off my subject’s face.

5) If you choose to alter the Blend mode, you can call upon that command by typing a keyword such as blend or mode in the search field of your Bor-Tex DASHBOARD and clicking Apply (I’m choosing the Hard Light blend mode again).

BEFORE AFTER

There are other texture-related tools also available from the Bor-Tex DASHBOARD including, but not limited to:

• removing or reducing the texture’s color without eliminating the texture
• manually painting the texture onto your primary photo precisely where you want it
• opacity adjustments and other commonly used Photoshop tools

If you look in the right place, it will also reveal your daily horoscope… but, I’ve said too much.

Try these methods out for yourself. While not every texture works for every image, you will quickly develop an eye for what can be most effective when needing to choose a texture. The possibilities are vast and the results can be phenomenal.

The film The Company Men has a promotional photo of the cast which shows up in Apples iTunes store and also on the Studio’s website. Have a look at the larger image on the iTunes store (shown below). This is a $15M budget movie, couldn’t they at least put the actors in the same room for 5 minutes to get a promo shot? The shadows going in different directions, the heads that have various hair-lights. The cartoon like processing of the faces and bodies. It’s one of the worst Photoshop jobs I’ve seen in a long, long time. I guess they didn’t care and it’s probably why the movie earned less than $5M (and no, I haven’t seen it).
